The setting is in a school. The story also takes place in the woods, and at Magnolia's house. The social and cultural issues in this story are that some people think they are better than others, and also there is jealousy. I do believe that we still have the same issues today because still some people think they are better than others, and also people still get jealous of others. The authors purpose for writing this is to teach people that everyone is the same and no one is better than anyone else, and that we should not feel jealous of anyone.

Just like with Violet and Magnolia jealousy still exists in the world today. An example of this is when a friend was jealous because of a pair of sneakers.

Jesus.jpgPaul was on his way to Foot Locker to buy the sneakers he had wanted for a year, when he saw the sign that said sold out. As he was walking home disappointed, he saw his friend, Lenny holding a Foot Locker bag. He quickly ran over to him to ask what was in the bag. Lenny opened the bag, took out the box, and Paul's rage grew. Lenny had bought the exact same sneakers that Paul wanted, the Jordan Gamma Blue 11 OG. Paul with his happy facade, walked away from Lenny, and went home. When he got home he looked online for the sneakers, but he couldn't find them anywhere. The next day when Paul saw Lenny he was wearing his sneakers. Paul slowly walked past him, hoping Lenny wouldn't see the jealousy on his face. All throughout the school day Paul was thinking of himself wearing those sneakers. The next day Paul was invited over to Lenny's house. Paul said that he would go, but only because he was planning on stealing his sneakers. Paul was about to steal them when Lenny walked in and asked him what he was doing. Paul had no choice except to tell Lenny the truth.

When Paul was faced with the decision of telling Lenny the truth, he did not know what to do. After a few minutes of debate he decided to be truthful, and tell Lenny what happened. He told Lenny that he was jealous of his sneakers, and wanted them so badly that he was going to steal them. Lenny listened to Paul, and told him that he forgave him. Lenny then gave Paul his sneakers and told him thank you for telling me the truth. Paul was so excited to finally have his shoes, but he did not feel right about taking his shoes, so he gave them back. Paul went home, and felt a lot better after he apologized to Lenny. He knew that he could have handled the situation better if he would have just told Lenny that he was jealous, and he could have saved up to buy them later.

The moral of this story would have to be just because your jealous does not mean you have to try and steal, and honesty is always the best answer. Lenny and Paul are a great example of this because when Paul was jealous of Lenny's sneakers he was going to steal them, but then he told him the truth. Because Paul told him the truth Lenny gave him the sneakers, but Paul politely declined and gave them back.
